Former Florida Hospital employee sentenced in patient data theft

A former Florida Hospital employee who admitted to stealing and selling private patient information was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison Monday.

Dale Munroe II worked as a registration representative at Florida Hospital's Celebration campus when he illegally accessed data from thousands of patients.

Prosecutors said Munroe, who registered patients as they came into the emergency room, accessed more than 763,000 records for patients treated at various hospital branches from 2009 to July 2011.

During the same time, the average employee accessed about 12,100 records.

Authorities said Munroe sold the private information, which included phone numbers and details about the patient's treatment, to Sergei Kusyakov.

Kusyakov, who was associated with an injury hotline, Metro Chiropractic and Wellness Center and City Lights Medical Center, has also been charged in the case and recently pleaded guilty.

Prosecutors said Kusyakov and other conspirators used the information to solicit customers for lawyers and chiropractors.

Court records state some of those patients were called within days after their visit to a Florida Hospital location. The caller knew specifics about the vehicle accident the patient had been involve with, and their treatment.

Kusyakov paid Munroe and his wife Katrina Munroe, who also worked at the hospital and stole patient information, more than $10,000, according to prosecutors.

Florida Hospital officials fired Dale Munroe after they learned he accessed the medical records for a hospital doctor who was fatally shot in a hospital parking garage.

Prosecutors said after Munroe was fired, his wife began stealing patient information.

Katrina Munroe, who also pleaded guilty to her involvement in the scheme, will be sentenced March 11. Kusyakov will be sentenced March 25.

In addition to prison, U.S. District Judge Roy B. Dalton Jr. sentenced Dale Munroe to two years probation.
