Political forecasts stir up a storm

The presidential campaigns are continuing to wage an aggressive back and forth, especially in Ohio. But the devastating impact of Sandy will likely put a wrench in many East Coast residents' plans to vote, as well as the tallying of those votes. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

By Alan Boyle

Nationwide polls may portray the presidential campaign as a neck-and-neck horse race, but less conventional data-crunching methods spit out a different picture, with President Barack Obama edging out GOP challenger Mitt Romney.

One big variable remains to be factored in: the effect of Hurricane Sandy. And one big state that's been relatively unaffected by the storm holds the key to the outcome: Ohio.?"It's been that way for the entire election cycle," said David Rothschild, an expert on opinion modeling at Microsoft Research and Columbia University's Applied Statistics Center.

Rothschild, who lays out election forecasts at the Predictwise website and blogs about prediction science on The Signal at Yahoo, surveyed the state of the art this weekend at the New Horizons in Science symposium, presented as part of the ScienceWriters2012 conference.

In the final days of the campaign, the divergent spins on the election outlook have sparked a few fireworks. Statistician Nate Silver's analysis for The New York Times' Five Thirty Eight column, which has consistently favored Obama even as many others were reporting a tightening of the race, drew criticism from the National Review's Josh Jordan for including "a little bit too much hope?of an Obama victory against what appears to be a surge of Romney momentum."

This week, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough virtually called for Silver's pundit license to be revoked.?"Anybody that thinks that this race is anything but a tossup right now is such an ideologue they should be kept away from typewriters, computers, laptops and microphones for the next 10 days, because they're jokes," he said on "Morning Joe."

Economist Paul Krugman went to Silver's defense in his own column for the Times, decrying the "war on objectivity" and saying that "all the election modelers have been faithful to their models, letting the numbers fall where they may."

"This is really scary," Krugman wrote. "It means that if these people triumph, science ? or any kind of scholarship ? will become impossible. Everything must pass a political test; if it isn't what the right wants to hear, the messenger is subjected to a smear campaign."

Silver's analysis is based on a state-by-state assessment of polling data from multiple sources, translated into an electoral vote count. Political prediction markets, such as those studied by Rothschild, use a different method to come up with a surprisingly similar snapshot of the horse race.

The markets offer a glorified kind of gambling on political fortunes: The winner-take-all markets let players "invest" in the prospects of a particular candidate. If the candidate wins, the investor gets, say, $1 a share. If the candidate loses, the investor gets nothing. Leading up to Election Day, investors can buy or sell shares in candidates to match their expectations of success.

The shifting share prices reflect the perceived probability of success. For example, Intrade's market?sets the probability of Obama's re-election at 63 percent. Meanwhile, Betfair and the Iowa Electronic Markets list a 70 percent chance. That's in the same ballpark as Silver's 72.9 percent estimate.

IEM / Univ. of Iowa

A chart shows share values on the Iowa Electronic Markets in the winner-take-all market for the presidential popular vote. The blue line indicates Democratic share prices, while the red line indicates GOP share prices.

Intentions vs. expectations
What the prediction markets provide is a probability figure, not a vote share figure. It reflects expectations about a given outcome, just as the Vegas odds reflected the expectation that the Giants would win the World Series, even before they swept the Tigers. There was a chance all the way up to the final out that the Tigers could roar back and take four games in a row to win the series. But in this case, at least, the Vegas marketplace predicted the outcome.

So what's the success rate of prediction markets? How do surveys that gauge expectations perform, compared with traditional surveys that gauge what voters say they intend to do? That's where Rothschild's research comes in: He and a colleague, Penn economist Justin Wolfers, looked at the predictions produced by traditional polls ("For whom do you intend to vote?"), as opposed to less traditional surveys ("Whom do you expect to win?"), in 345 political races.

Most of the time, the predictions from the two types of forecasts were in agreement. But in those cases where the predictions were different, the expectation survey was right 76 percent of the time, while the traditional intention survey was right only 24 percent of the time.

Rothschild said the strength of expectation polls may lie in the fact that investors can absorb information from other sources to come up with a consensus that reflects the wisdom of crowds. "Asking people about expectations is equivalent to as if people went out to 10 random voters and reported the binary result," he said.

Based on the prediction markets, it's as if Obama is the favored team in the seventh game of the World Series. The betting odds have been in his favor for the past year ??even though there have been ups and downs, such as his slump in the first presidential debate. Now that all the debates are done, most of the uncertainty has been wrung out of the campaign.

"There's one more unexpected event: this hurricane," Rothschild said.

After the storm
Lots of prognosticators have pointed to the uncertainties raised by Hurricane Sandy. The conventional wisdom was that Romney would benefit from a long-recognized anti-incumbent effect in late pre-election polling, as well as a race-tightening effect. However, Sandy changes the calculus.

"Generally, natural disasters benefit incumbents," Rothschild said. There's a tendency to put politics aside, rally 'round the flag and let the president look presidential. (That effect can go negative if the disaster response doesn't go well, as President George W. Bush found out in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.) Even before the storm hit, Scarborough said Romney's momentum could stall in Sandy's aftermath. "It changes everything with a week to go," he said.

There's already some evidence that the rally effect has kicked in: For example, today New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie, said hat Obama's response to the storm crisis was "outstanding" and that he didn't "give a damn about Election Day." Christie is due to tour devastated areas with the president on Wednesday.

The catastrophic aftermath of the storm may affect early voting as well as the Election Day turnout in places like New York and New Jersey. That could cut into the Democratic vote. Research has shown that obstacles to voting tend to hit Democrats harder than Republicans. But in Sandy's case, that statistical effect may not be critical because those states are relatively safe for Obama.

Sandy's effect may be more crucial hundreds of miles from the worst of the storm, in Ohio. For the past year, Ohio has been the "flip state" in Rothschild's calculations. Neither candidate has a clear path to victory unless he wins Ohio's electoral votes, Rothschild said. That's one reason why Romney was the headliner for a storm-relief rally in Ohio today ? and why Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton are canvassing the state while Obama tours the hurricane zone.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney reacts as he accepts a food donation from a supporter during a storm-relief event in Kettering, Ohio.

How will it all turn out? There are lots of statistical models floating around, and no matter which way it turns out, some will score a home run while others will strike out. In addition to the political prediction markets we've been talking about, here are a few more forecasts to watch:

Final 3 at WSOP marathon toward $8.53M crown

Two poker professionals and a college student traded chips, big bluffs and shocking hands during a marathon final run at the World Series of Poker ? and were no closer toward settling the $8.53 million crown after more than six hours of play.

Arizona State senior Jake Balsiger and card pros Greg Merson of Laurel, Md., and Jesse Sylvia of Las Vegas began play Tuesday night having already outlasted six others at a final table that began on Monday. But they refused to give in to one another, with roughly $4.8 million on the line ? the difference between first and third place.

"This is exciting," Balsiger told his tablemates just before midnight Wednesday in a game playing out as part-mental warfare, part just plain luck.

Merson took a commanding chip lead with perhaps his gutsiest play of the tournament ? sniffing weakness in Balsiger and re-raising a 10 million chip bet all-in with just queen high. Balsiger couldn't call, and Merson moved up to more than 100 million in chips.

He didn't have the chip lead for long.

Several hands later, Balsiger wagered the last of his chips with an ace-10, finding himself well behind Sylvia's ace-queen and his tournament at risk. But a 10 came on the turn, allowing Balsiger to double up.

Then, Sylvia went all-in against Merson, his ace-king against Merson's pocket kings. A four on the river made a wheel straight ? ace through five ? and vaulted Sylvia to the chip lead, sending his supporters at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino into a frenzy.

Par for the course in poker, a game where skill is significant, but luck is certainly very powerful.

Balsiger eliminated Russell Thomas in fourth place just after midnight early Tuesday to set up the trio's final showdown. The 21-year-old is seeking to become the series' youngest ever no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event champion, besting a 2009 record set by Joe Cada.

Merson, 24, went into play Tuesday night with 88.4 million in chips, compared with 62.8 million for Sylvia and 46.9 million for Balsiger.

Each competitor is guaranteed at least $3.8 million.

Merson picked up hands and took control of the three-handed table early, picking up strong hands and building his stack to more than half the chips in the tournament.

But Sylvia's fold of a strong hand ? a nine high flush ? likely kept him in the tournament after he finished contemplating a Merson bet of nearly 3 million in chips. Merson held a queen high flush in a cooler-type hand ? one that gamblers in Sylvia's spot routinely lose on.

Sylvia, 26, went into the final table with a chip lead but lost it to Merson after Merson benefited from an opponent's unforced error that cost him the tournament.

Merson eliminated Hungarian poker professional Andras Koroknai in sixth place, calling Koroknai's all-in bet with an ace-king and finding Koroknai with king-queen ? a marginal hand for the situation.

Chips have no real monetary value in tournament poker. Each player at the final table must lose all his chips to lose the tournament, and win all the chips at the table to be crowned champion.

The tournament began in July with 6,598 players and was chopped down to nine through seven sessions spread over 11 days. Play stopped after nearly 67 hours logged at the tables for each player, with minimum bets going up every two hours.

The finalists played Monday night until only three players remained, leaving the top three to settle the title Tuesday night.

Report: Apple exec refused to apologize for Maps

(AP) ? The head of Apple's iPhone software development was asked to resign after he refused to sign a letter apologizing for the flaws of Apple's mapping application, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal says Scott Forstall's refusal was the latest clash between him and other executives, and led to the company's announcement Monday that he is stepping down and leaving the company next year.

Forstall's unit was responsible for the Maps application, which was unfavorably compared to the Google Maps app it replaced.

Apple also announced the immediate departure of John Browett, a British retail executive who took over Apple's stores in April.

An eye-of-the-hurricane view of storm chasing from the star of the Discovery Channel hit series Storm Chasers.

Only one in ten chases actually intercept a tornado-unless you?re Reed Timmer. The thrill-seeking meteorologist and star of Storm Chasers has followed and faced down more violent tornadoes than anyone. Into the Storm brings readers into the mind of this man and his mission-collecting data that could save lives-in the terrifying, awe-inspiring world of big weather.

Into the Storm is also a fascinating look at the science of weather-what causes extreme conditions, its connection to climate change, and how a tornado gets its stovepipe structure.

Long before he was one of the stars of the TV series Storm Chasers, Timmer was no stranger to the thrill and danger of storm chasing. Ever since he was in college in the late 1990s, studying meteorology, he was drawn to tornadoes, hurricanes, and other big-weather phenomena. This book, which will unavoidably remind some readers of the movie Twister, is a mixture of autobiography and edge-of-your-seat adventure. Timmer tells us with almost breathless enthusiasm about tracking Hurricane Floyd as it approached the U.S. in 1999; about following Katrina in 2005 and helping its victims in the aftermath; and about, in 2000, barely escaping a potentially lethal hailstorm. The author also takes us through the history of storm chasing, which began with a University of Oklahoma project in the early 1970s in which meteorology students filmed tornadoes to learn how they behaved. For fans of ?extreme weather? adventures, this is a must-read. ?David Pitt

Product Review.
First off ? let me say that this is a GREAT book. It?s well-written, it?s interesting, and it engages the reader.

Ironically, the stories that engage the reader most are the ones that don?t really involved tornadoes. I thought the hurricane descriptions and narration were far more interesting than the tornado ones. Don?t get me wrong, the tornado tales were incredible, but the hurricane (especially Katrina) really had me going on the edge of my seat. In addition, Reed?s story of starting his business, building connections with the media, etc. are fascinating.

What I was really looking for in this book was the background information on how most of us know Reed Timmer. I was truly hoping for some behind-the-scenes information about the Discovery show. (My theory is that there is another book planned on this material down the road?) The show goes into depth about Dr. Josh Wurman (the ?Dean Wermer? of this last season, and earlier ones as well) and his sometimes contentious past relationship with Reed. None of this makes the book. Chris Chittick all of a sudden shows up at the end of the book as a ?long-time? friend and chase partner. However, there is nothing in the past biography about him.

Something else I think that would be key to this book would have been an index. This book is FILLED with incredible weather information and chasing tips. An index would have made this book a practical tool in addition to being a fun tale.

Reed ? Based on your many mentions of the book of checking the internet for critiques about your chasing, my thinking is that you?re probably reading this. I do hope you are planning a follow-up book to cover the Discovery Channel years. Your interactions with Wurman, Casey, Samaras, etc? would be INCREDIBLY interesting. In addition, many of us are wondering how you made up with Joel after last season?s blow-out, how you met Ginger, etc? You?ve got a great deal of material for a follow-up tome.

The most telling in this book is Reed Timmer?s brutal honesty about himself. He truly does open himself up to critique and goes in-depth on his past second-guessing and ethics of his chosen profession. To that ? I say ?well-done?.

Product Review.
I have to admit I was skeptical at first: Wouldn?t a visually dynamic phenomenon like storm chasing suffer when translated to the written page? Fortunately, no. To the contrary, I found that all the extra details and context that you get in these pages help to put the reader in the passenger seat like no short clip or TV series can.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in weather or adrenaline. I would never personally risk my life to see storms and hurricanes up close, but reading this gave me a chance to experience what it?s like for Mr. Timmer and the others who take that risk in the name of science and kick-ass video.

Highlights for me were the Moore, OK chase and the description of what it was like to go face to face with Hurricane Katrina. If I have a complaint, it?s that reading about all these chases made me crave more. I?m not about to hop in a truck and head for the plains, so here?s hoping for a sequel.

Product Review.
?Weather? you watch Discovery Channel?s ?Storm Chasers? or ?Weather? you don?t there is very little chance that you will be able to pick up the book ?Into the Storm? and then put it back down. If you do happen to watch ?Storm Chasers? you will recognize Reed Timmer as the energetic and animated meteorologist/videographer in the burgundy colored Kevlar and Rhino Liner coated ?Dominator? storm chase vehicle.

Reed, as you will learn in this book, is much more than an enthusiastic adrenaline junkie out for a fix. He chases for the science and the knowledge that is obtained by his adventures in the pursuit of his elusive prey, the tornado.

Reed is obviously a very intelligent young man with many hunts still to go. His prey is the cyclonic warriors that attack Middle America each year and every year. Rarely during the year is there not at least one life lost because of a tornado. In his efforts, Reed is not only trying to capture the powerful beasts on his video camera as they move across the grasslands, farmlands and wooded areas of the continent but he is also gathering previously unretrievable data that will be used one day to protect property but more importantly lives.

This book will guide you through what drives him to make the next journey and it will show you the seeds that were sewn early in his life that kept him on the path that he has found to be fulfilling and exciting. As you read this you will find yourself in the back seat of the car wondering if you should close your eyes or open them to see these monsters take you with him. You will also find that you are getting an excellent education as well. Reed explains the ingredients that make up the recipes for the perfect storms and he explains how the weather observations you have seen in your lifetime make up both the dangerous and the spectacular.

There have been few books that I have enjoyed more but what I enjoyed the least was the end. Because I chose the unabridged audio version from Audible.com, I was surprised when it was all over as I could not see the pages waning away as the book was coming to a close. I wanted more. I want more!

Home Learning Family Going Sane: A little storm won't bring us ...

Home Learning Family Going Sane: A little storm won't bring us down, but it will bring us together!

A little storm won't bring us down, but it will bring us together!

We live in New England so are very prone to wild and crazy weather and we would never let a little something like the recent "Superstorm" Sandy get in our way! We are fortunate to not have been in any of the devastation near the coastline and having grown up here I know what to do to get ready for things like this because you never know when mother nature is going to call your bluff.?

We took some time on Saturday and Sunday to get the yard prepared and I baked some treats to hold us over. I always have KM's lessons prepared ahead of time, so when we lost power on Monday afternoon I felt pretty okay with it. She had put off her morning routine to get a few things done on the computer before the internet was gone - a very difficult blow for any teenager!!! - so she got to work on her chemistry and applying algebra while I got the last minute things together before it got dark.?About an hour and a half in it started to get chilly so we built a fire and nestled up with?Hakim's A History of US?Book 7, which KM still likes me to read aloud to her. It was so nice to just snuggle up with the book and learn about the reconstruction of our nation after the devastating civil war.?

When we were finished with that KM decided to play some solitaire, she has been quite addicted to the computer version lately, but she busted out the real cards this time. After a winning a few hands in a row, she asked if I wanted to play something. Generally we play Go Fish or War, as she has never really had the patience to learn other card games - too many rules that I have to keep on her about because I can't always remember them all -, but I decided to push my luck and see if she wanted to learn to play rummy. Four games in and she had the hang of it and didn't want to stop playing!?

At about 7p we decided to get the generator going so that we could get the fridge on, make something for dinner and watch a movie or two. I had picked up The Lost Boys & Lost Boys The Tribe to watch on Halloween, but since we had watched every other movie in the house about a billion times we decided to bump these up a bit. CJ and I had a hard time not giving away the storyline in The Lost Boys, but KM has gotten used to that with pretty much every 80s movie we watch - along with giving up on the hope that CJ won't start belting out the lyrics to each and every song! We had a great time and the evening flew by until still without power we shut everything down and headed to bed sometime around midnight.

I awoke in the morning to the hum of generators throughout the neighbor and realized that we still didn't have power...well this is a new experience, I hadn't been without power for more than 8 hours since Hurricane Gloria in 1985 when it was out for 4 days - I was only 7 and remember more from stories that others told than actually remembering it myself. I started the day with getting the generator running and making pancakes on the electric griddle. Shortly after KM got up I realized that we had some ground beef in the fridge that needed to be cooked ASAP, so we discussed what we could make with it. CJ piped up that he really would love american chop suey....UGGH OK, but we have no stove...KM suggested the crock pot, but with no internet access I had no idea how to get that one done right....HMMM what to do, what to do. We put our minds together and realized we could cook the noodles and ground beef using the side burner on the grill and then throw the veggies, sauce, and everything into the crockpot to get it to meld together nicely. KM and I worked our magic and ?about an hour later had everything done - sometimes you just need to use some problem solving skills and team work!!!?

The rest of our day went along pretty normally, with KM doing her lessons and adjusting where needed - like swapping her chemistry experiment and videos out to work on her cosmetology. She dropped what she was doing to help with whatever was needed and was really great about it. After lunch we were all getting a little stir crazy and feeling a bit electronically deprived, so we decided to take a ride to library to collect our emails and maybe see if we could find some movies to watch if the power was out much longer. While there we ran into a few of KM's friends from around town - two home ed buddies who had met up to play Pokemon on their DSs and one of her bowling league teammates who was catching up on some schoolwork - schools were closed for the second day - they chatted and discussed their own highlights and disappointments with the storm.

I also ran into some acquaintances who were discussing their experiences over the past 24 hours and I was shocked at many of the comments, scenarios and complaints that I heard. I often don't allow myself to get sucked into these types of discussions as they never turn out well. I heard the usual myriad - "Oh I HOPE school is back on tomorrow!", "[child's name] is driving me CRAZY!", "All [child's name] has been doing is complaining", "[child's name] won't do anything I ask them to," and "I had to pay [child's name] to get the yard ready for the storm and now I have to pay them again to clean up from it." I tried to politely nod and stay out of it, but?I was standing in line to check out our items so I couldn't avoid it.When I was asked how things had gone for us in the storm, I smiled and said "No real problems. KM helped me make dinner, we hung out and had some really great family time together." The other people just stared at me for a second, as if they were waiting for the punch line, but there was none. That is all that happened. No arguments, no bribing, no hassle, no real inconvenience at all on our end.?

I try very hard to not have the so common elitist/better than?"homeschool" family?mentality, but there are just some situations that make me so very, VERY grateful that we choose this path. We have an incredible family, we are connected in a way that was not there 5 years ago before we regained control of our lives. We can adapt, solve problems and deal with whatever comes our way TOGETHER. My daughter knows that being part of this family means that we work as a team - none of us is more valuable or less valued than the other and we all need to do whatever it takes to make OUR lives content and comfortable.

On our ride home, I relayed the conversation to KM to see what her take would be. She had heard the same types of things from a number of her friends that she had been texting with throughout the storm. I asked what her biggest drawback had been with the storm and she said "It would have to be that I only beat you once at rummy!"?

Supervision? New Retinal Implants Could Push Human Sight Further

Source: flickr / comedy_nose

Electrode implants that can partially restore sight to the blind already exist. These systems translate visual images into electrical activity to stimulate cells on the retina; the cells activate and send information to the brain, which compiles a rudimentary image from the input. Retinal prostheses are already available in Europe, and could receive FDA approval in the U.S. within the coming months.

But a new kind of retinal implant, revealed at this week?s Biomedical Engineering Society meeting in Atlanta, could eventually take those devices to another level. "Theoretically we can do better than the human eye in terms of resolution," says bioengineer Massoud Khraiche of UC-San Diego. "And also, with this device you can see infrared energy, and you can see at night."

The implants that Khraiche?s team has proposed would replace bulky electrode arrays with microscopic silicon nanowires. The nanowires are good at picking up light, and detect a much broader spectrum of electromagnetic energy than the human eye. While Second Sight implants use a camera to generate an initial image, the nanowires could serve as both the photoreceptor (the part that picks up the light) and neurostimulator (the part that stimulates the brain to make a person "see" an image.). And since the nanowires are tiny and densely packed, they may be able to stimulate a greater number of retinal cells and thereby generate a sharper image.

The retinal prostheses haven?t been tested in humans yet. The research group is in the midst of their first animal studies, where they?ve implanted the nanowires behind the retinae of blind rabbits. (Since the researchers can?t ask the rabbit whether it sees or not, they?ve also placed electrodes in the rabbits? brains to monitor activity.)

The preliminary results are promising. For instance: Khriache says the researchers did a test in which they interfaced the nanowires with biopsies from the retinas of rats. Although rats usually cannot see red light, Khraiche?s team showed that the interfaced tissue responded to a flash of red light with a spike in cell activity. "We actually showed that we can make this retina see red light," he says. Had the nanowires been connected to a living brain, it?s possible that the brain would have seen the flash, too.

Prison Architect dev says consoles are made unappealing to indies ...

Prison Architect developer Introversion has been making indie games longer than most, and it remains unimpressed by console support. Introversion co-founder Mark Morris spoke to VG24/7 about its latest title and why it has no current plans to bring it to Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony's systems.

Much of Introversion's reluctance comes from feeling burned by the Xbox Live Arcade development of Darwinia+, a port of the PC title which was an early example of a commercially successful indie game.

?[The $10,000 cost for an Xbox 360 development kit is] ridiculous, and it?s non-refundable once you?ve bought it," Morris said. "You?ve got to pay--I think our quality assurance bill was $30,000 for testing with Darwinia+, and it took four years to get the game certified to a standard that Microsoft wanted. It then sold rubbish. We hardly shipped any units on Xbox 360, compared to PC."

Morris said Microsoft has attempted to capture some of the PC's strong community with XBLA and Xbox Live Indie Games. But it just hasn't been enough to make up for how much more difficult and expensive it is to develop for consoles, all for no better returns.

?You?re not delivering the amount of sales, you?re making us work harder, and ultimately we?re getting paid less than what we do on PC. So I think they?re definitely--in the indie world--second class customers ? If they want to work with us--and if they want indie games on their systems--they?re going to have to change quite a lot to make it attractive.?

Shawn: 'We're not trying to backstab' on 'DWTS'

Adam Taylor / ABC

Shawn Johnson and pro partner Derek Hough danced a romantic rumba to the "Titanic" theme song last week.

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Each week, Olympian and season eight "Dancing With the Stars" champ Shawn Johnson will be sharing her experiences on "All-Stars" with The Clicker! Look for Q&As, exclusive photos and more from the gold medalist throughout the season as she competes to win her second mirror ball trophy, this time alongside pro Derek Hough.

You can follow us on Twitter?@TODAY_Clicker to get all the latest updates on Shawn's quest for ballroom glory. Shawn is also on Twitter @ShawnJohnson.

The Clicker: How did it feel not having anyone be eliminated last week?
Shawn: I think since we weren?t there the week didn?t feel that different. We shot two shows last Monday and the second one aired on Tuesday. We rehearsed all day on Tuesday. The scores will transfer over to (this) week. The tension was still there. We were still trying to give our best performances!

The Clicker: What reaction did you get to your ?Titanic? themed rumba with Derek?
Shawn: It?s been nothing but positive. I couldn?t have been prouder of the dance. And Derek couldn?t have been prouder of what we did. Even though the judges didn?t necessarily love it, we did.

The Clicker: That seems to be Derek?s philosophy ? do the best dance that will please you and the audience and then let the chips fall where they may with the judges.
Shawn: Definitely; this was about showing the world a different side of me. This wasn?t what people are used to seeing. I stepped out of my comfort zone.

The Clicker: Derek looked like Jack from ?Titanic.?
Shawn: It was scary how similar he looked to Leonardo DiCaprio!

The Clicker: It was great to see how everyone rallied around Melissa Rycroft after her injury last week.
Shawn:?Yes. It?s not a cutthroat show. We?re not trying to backstab people or get them off the show. We genuinely get along. We?re cheering and screaming when someone else is out there dancing. We don?t wish any harm to anyone. When Melissa went down it was like a family member being injured.

The Clicker: When you and Gilles Marini chose the songs you?d do group dances to, Gilles was very excited to get ?Gangnam Style? and Derek appeared less than thrilled to get ?Call Me Maybe.? But you guys ended up doing better.
Shawn: At first, yeah, we wanted "Gangnam Style" because it?s the craze right now. It?s the modern day "Macarena." Ours may not have had the same energy, but once we put it together things started to fall into place. We may not have captured the audience as much, but it was clean and the judges liked it.

The Clicker: Do you agree with Kelly Monaco?s post-dance comments recently where she said the "DWTS" is not really about dancing but about the emotional journey you go on with your partner as you step outside your comfort zone?
Shawn: Yes, definitely. She summed it up the best. It?s not about dancing. It?s about everything else. We all come in here with different career paths looking to find confidence in a world that we?re not comfortable with and finding trust in your partner to take you somewhere you?ve never gone before.

The Clicker: How would you describe the journey you took the first time to the one you?ve had so far this time?
Shawn: I was a lot more reserved the first time mostly because of my age. I hadn?t stepped out into the world that much beyond gymnastics. I was shy and afraid to take risks. I kept to myself more. I wasn?t able to relate to as many people, again, because of my age. This time, I?m letting myself go more. It?s been the most liberating experience I ever had. I give so much of the credit to Derek. I don?t think anyone else could have brought this out of me. Derek is phenomenal. He?s the best out there. His talent is ridiculous. He takes everything so seriously and turns it into a masterpiece.

The Clicker: What?s the theme/dance for tonight??
Shawn: Country, which I?m happy about. I love the Zac Brown Band. All I listen to is country music. We?re doing the cha cha. My last one was great. It was my best dance.

The Clicker: Does that make it easier?
Shawn: Not really. It?s a completely different season. Tonight?s more of a theme. It?s not even relatable but hopefully it will go well!

Watch Shawn perform on "Dancing With the Stars" at 8 p.m. on Monday night on ABC. Plus, join our TV editor, Anna Chan, as she hosts a live chat during each performance show. Sign up for a reminder!

Marketing Campaigns: Creating Email Lists | Travel

If you plan to try and do some Website marketing to promote your business endeavor, you should seriously consider email marketing as at least one tier of your internet marketing campaign. Many businesses avoid email marketing simply because they believe all email marketing campaigns are purely spam. However, this isn?t true and not partaking with this type of marketing could potentially cause your business to lose out on significant amounts of business. By not appealing to prospective customers via email, your business may lose a great deal of business to competitors who are using email marketing campaigns to reach customers around the world. However, the initial step of an email marketing campaign should be creating an email distribution list. This article will talk about some popular alternatives for accomplishing this and should help you to educate yourself regarding what is acceptable and what?s not with regards to email marketing.

Once you have made the decision to start using email marketing to market your business you are likely facing the dilemma of compiling an email distribution list. This is essentially a listing of email addresses to which you?ll email your advertising and promotional materials. One common approach to gain a listing of email addresses would be to buy a list from distributors. However, using this method is not effective in any way and we don?t recommend it. The problem with purchasing an email list is you have no way of knowing whether or not the members of the list might have any interest whatsoever with your services or products. This is very important because since you would like to reach a large audience using your email marketing you also want this audience to generally be members of your overall target market. Whenever you purchase an email list you may be sending your email messages to a few users who might be interested but this really is largely coincidental and isn?t apt to be well received because the message was not solicited.

Online users are extremely quick to delete materials they believe to be spam without even opening or reading the emails. In fact some Internet service providers include spam filters which may automatically delete your emails in case your messages are deemed to be spam. These filters run complex algorithms on the subject heading and content of your message to determine whether or not it is spam and they are quite adept at removing spam. Therefore you take the potential risk of having your email marketing effort turn out to be a complete waste if the majority of recipients never even read or get the message.

A far better approach to create an email distribution list for the email marketing campaign is to ask current customers in addition to interested prospective customers to register using your site to receive additional information and periodic updates about your products and services along with other information which might be of interest in their mind. This provides you with a database of email addresses from current customers along with potential customers who have a genuine interest in your products and services and who definitely are considering learning more about these products and services. Once you have a list of interested customers or prospective customers you are able to send emails or create e-newsletter for distribution to the members of the email list. These documents should include a wealth of valuable information as well as a soft sell pitch for your products and services. This information will be valued by the readers and may even make it possible to persuade them to try your products and services.

You might also choose to include useful links to either your site along with other websites which may be of interest to your readers. Your site content should likewise have a portion which urges the reader to take a specific action including making a purchase or perhaps investigating a product further.

Mars like Hawaii? NASA rover's first soil studies help fingerprint Martian minerals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has completed initial experiments showing the mineralogy of Martian soil is similar to weathered basaltic soils of volcanic origin in Hawaii.

The minerals were identified in the first sample of Martian soil ingested recently by the rover. Curiosity used its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin) to obtain the results, which are filling gaps and adding confidence to earlier estimates of the mineralogical makeup of the dust and fine soil widespread on the Red Planet.

"We had many previous inferences and discussions about the mineralogy of Martian soil," said David Blake of NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., who is the principal investigator for CheMin. "Our quantitative results provide refined and in some cases new identifications of the minerals in this first X-ray diffraction analysis on Mars."

The identification of minerals in rocks and soil is crucial for the mission's goal to assess past environmental conditions. Each mineral records the conditions under which it formed. The chemical composition of a rock provides only ambiguous mineralogical information, as in the textbook example of the minerals diamond and graphite, which have the same chemical composition, but strikingly different structures and properties.

CheMin uses X-ray diffraction, the standard practice for geologists on Earth using much larger laboratory instruments. This method provides more accurate identifications of minerals than any method previously used on Mars. X-ray diffraction reads minerals' internal structure by recording how their crystals distinctively interact with X-rays. Innovations from Ames led to an X-ray diffraction instrument compact enough to fit inside the rover.

These NASA technological advances have resulted in other applications on Earth, including compact and portable X-ray diffraction equipment for oil and gas exploration, analysis of archaeological objects and screening of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, among other uses.

"Our team is elated with these first results from our instrument," said Blake. "They heighten our anticipation for future CheMin analyses in the months and miles ahead for Curiosity."

The specific sample for CheMin's first analysis was soil Curiosity scooped up at a patch of dust and sand that the team named Rocknest. The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 micrometers), roughly the width of a human hair. The sample has at least two components: dust distributed globally in dust storms and fine sand originating more locally. Unlike conglomerate rocks Curiosity investigated a few weeks ago, which are several billion years old and indicative of flowing water, the soil material CheMin has analyzed is more representative of modern processes on Mars.

"Much of Mars is covered with dust, and we had an incomplete understanding of its mineralogy," said David Bish, CheMin co-investigator with Indiana University in Bloomington. "We now know it is mineralogically similar to basaltic material, with significant amounts of feldspar, pyroxene and olivine, which was not unexpected. Roughly half the soil is non-crystalline material, such as volcanic glass or products from weathering of the glass. "

Bish said, "So far, the materials Curiosity has analyzed are consistent with our initial ideas of the deposits in Gale Crater recording a transition through time from a wet to dry environment. The ancient rocks, such as the conglomerates, suggest flowing water, while the minerals in the younger soil are consistent with limited interaction with water."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory Project, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity and CheMin.

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore pokes fun at iPhone and Android, provides deep dive of Windows Phone 8 in new video

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore pokes fun of iPhone and Android, provides deep dive of Windows Phone 8 in new video

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore -- also known as the manager for the entire Windows Phone program -- spent a fair amount of time on stage in California today detailing the highs of Windows Phone 8. Clearly, that wasn't enough. The man himself has thrown out a near-20 minute video detailing the nooks and crannies of Microsoft's latest mobile operating system, no doubt in hopes of convincing tired users of Android and iPhone to consider something more Metrorrific.

Outside of tightly integrated Skype, beautifully arranged live tiles, outstanding new hardware, support for LTE, a guest access mode by the name of Kid's Corner and refreshed photo sharing, WP8 offers a wealth of cloud services to those who will also be upgrading to Windows 8 on their PCs. Heck, the outfit's Mac software is even going to make it possible port your iTunes libraries and playlists over to the Music hub in Windows Phone 8. It wouldn't be an all-out marketing assault without a bit of verbal assault, though, and it doesn't take Joe long to get there:

"It's the only phone that has live tiles, for the people you care about and the apps that you use all the time. It's a different story than iOS and Android. The iOS 6 homescreen is really just a sea of static icons. It's not people; it's not live data. Of course, after five years, they have added one more row of icons! Android homescreens typically present a complex maze of icons, widgets, and settings. But, they look a lot like iPhones, too. If you put a bunch of them together on a table, it'd be hard to tell your own from the crowd. We felt there was a better way. Windows Phone 8 -- it looks different, and that's because we didn't make WP8 for all of us, we made it for each of us."

Catch the full clip after the break.

Yeast model offers clues to possible drug targets for Lou Gehrig's disease, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a devastatingly cruel neurodegenerative disorder that robs sufferers of the ability to move, speak and, finally, breathe. Now researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and San Francisco's Gladstone Institutes have used baker's yeast -- a tiny, one-celled organism -- to identify a chink in the armor of the currently incurable disease that may eventually lead to new therapies for human patients.

"Even though yeast and humans are separated by a billion years of evolution, we were able to use the power of yeast genetics to identify an unexpected potential drug target for ALS," said Aaron Gitler, PhD, an associate professor of genetics at Stanford. "Many neurodegenerative disorders such as ALS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's exhibit protein clumping or misfolding within the neurons that is thought to either cause or contribute to the conditions. We are trying to figure out why these proteins aggregate in neurons in the brain and spinal cord, and what happens when they do."

In 2008, Gitler received a New Innovator award from the National Institutes of Health to use yeast as a model for understanding human neurodegenerative diseases and as a way to identify new targets for drug development.

Gitler is the co-senior author of the research, published online Oct. 28 in Nature Genetics. Robert Farese, Jr., MD, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes, is the other co-senior author. Stanford graduate student Maria Armakola shares co-first authorship with Matthew Higgins, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar at Gladstone.

Most cases of ALS have no clear-cut cause. However, it has recently been shown that an RNA-binding protein called TDP-43 accumulates in clumps in the cytoplasm of spinal cord neurons in many people with the condition, and mutations in this protein have been found in some people with the ALS. Researchers like Gitler and Farese have been able to mimic the disease in yeast by expressing TDP-43 at higher-than-normal levels, which causes the protein to form lethal clumps in the cells' cytoplasm.

"In humans, the progression of the disease can take years before symptoms arise," said Gitler. "But in yeast, we see protein clumping in the cytoplasm within two days and the cells rapidly begin to die." With their model system in place, Gitler and Farese set out to see whether it was possible to protect yeast cells from this effect by tinkering with the function of other proteins in the cell.

In this study, the researchers discovered that blocking the production of a protein called Dbr1 in a yeast model stops the TDP-43 clumping and allows the cells to live normally. The researchers confirmed the results in human nerve cells grown in the laboratory and in rat neurons overexpressing TDP-43.

"In this study we made no assumptions as to how TDP-43 injures cells," said Farese, "but instead screened the whole yeast genome to find genes that might prevent the toxicity. Independently, both our lab and the Gitler lab found that loss of Dbr1, an enzyme involved in RNA processing, could do this."

Dbr1 serves as part of the cellular clean-up crew that mops up the bits of unwanted RNA generated as part of the protein production line. In our DNA, most genes consist of coding regions, called exons, broken up into several segments by non-coding regions, called introns. Cells can make many different, related proteins from the same stretch of DNA by mixing and matching different exons in a process called splicing.

When the DNA is first copied, or transcribed, into RNA, the introns as well as the exons are included. But the cell quickly splices out the introns, which are released into the cytoplasm as little loops, or lariats. Dbr1, in turn, clips the loops to open them and make them accessible to the cell's disposal system.

Blocking the production of Dbr1 causes the RNA lariats to build up in the cytoplasm. The researchers showed -- by creating lariats with a binding site for a fluorescent tracking protein -- that the mutant TDP-43 binds to these excess lariats rather than clumping. The effect is like using a paper towel to mop up a spill on your computer keyboard: binding to the lariats appears to keep TDP-43 from causing havoc elsewhere.

"Normally, TDP-43 is found in the nucleus," said first author Armakola. "But in the diseased cells, it aggregates in the cytoplasm and forms clumps. We developed a novel way to track where these lariats go in living cells, and we saw that when Dbr1 is missing, the lariats act as a sink to sequester TDP-43."

The researchers note that it's still not entirely clear whether the cells die because the mutant TDP-43 is drawing essential RNA transcripts or regulatory molecules away from the nucleus and into the cytoplasm, or because it's not performing its normal RNA-binding function in the nucleus. Both could contribute to the progression of the disease.

The results in the yeast, rodent and human cells, however, suggest that therapeutic approaches aimed at blocking Dbr1 function, or even creating artificial lariat-like formations to draw away the mutant molecule, should be explored.

"Next, we'd like to explore blocking Dbr1 function in animals such as flies, worms and rodents," said Armakola. "We're also interested in identifying small molecule inhibitors of Dbr1."
