Eating Raw PA Farmer's Market Chicken Way Less Safe Than ...

081217101539-largeOne of our old favorites goes like this:
So an old Jewish woman walks into Sol?s butcher shop and asks the butcher if the chickens are fresh. ?Mrs. Rabinowitz,? the butcher says, ?my chickens are the freshest you will find anywhere.? The woman points to a chicken and asks to see it. Sol places the chicken on the counter where Mrs. R. proceeds to lift the bird by the wings and places her nose close to where the wing meats the breast. She inhales deeply and frowns slightly. Then she moves on to the hole between the legs and inhales deeply by the body cavity. She looks sternly at Sol and says ?Nisht Gut, Feh!? and requests another chicken. Through three separate chickens she performs the same rigorous olfactory inspection and after the third failure Sol, clearly fed up, looks at her and says. ?Lady, could you pass that test??

ScienceDaily.com is reporting that ?Raw, whole chickens purchased from farmers markets throughout Pennsylvania contained significantly higher levels of bacteria that can cause foodborne illness compared to those purchased from grocery stores in the region? A study by researchers at Penn State purchased chickens from farmers markets and grocery stores across Pennsylvania and found that of the birds purchased at farmer?s markets, 90 percent tested positive for Campylobacter and 28 percent harbored Salmonella, while those numbers were respectively 20% and 28% for store bought organic whole birds and 8% and 52% for the regular off the shelf, god know?s what these poor birds have been through, brands.

Frankly all of those numbers are kind of freaking us out, but 90%? Christ that?s like nine out of 10. We love farmers markets and locavoreing and all that hippie crap, but damn chicken, you dirty. It should be noted that the study was small, just a couple hundred birds and further research is needed.

You can read the results of the entire study here, or you can skip it and live in ignorant bliss. Either way, medium rare is not a good choice for your poultry.
