Neil Armstrong's family, NASA remember first moonwalker

The late astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, was memorialized in ceremonies around the country on Friday (Aug. 31).

Armstrong, 82, passed away Aug. 25 due to complications resulting from cardiovascular surgery, which he underwent earlier this month.

In July 1969, Armstrong commanded Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission. His first words upon setting foot on the moon were, "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Armstrong's family, together with invited guests including the first moonwalker's fellow astronauts and the leadership of NASA, gathered at the Camargo Club in Cincinnati for a private memorial service on Friday morning.

The family's service was strictly invitation-only and closed to the press. The guest list was not released, but among those in attendance were Armstrong's two Apollo 11 crew mates Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, as well as Apollo astronauts Bill Anders, Dick Gordon, Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan. Mercury astronaut and former Ohio Senator John Glenn also attended with his wife Annie.

Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) eulogized Armstrong, as did the astronaut's two sons Eric ("Rick") and Mark, and Piper Van Wagenen, one of Armstrong's 10 grandchildren.

"Today, we pay tribute to a pioneering American; an explorer, a patriot and an individual who, with 'one small step,' achieved an impossible dream. Family, friends and colleagues of Neil's gathered to reflect on his extraordinary life and career, and offer thanks for the many blessings he shared with us along the way," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a statement. "A grateful nation offers praise and salutes a humble servant who answered the call and dared to dream." [Neil Armstrong Memorial Service (Photos)]

U.S. Navy F/A-18 jets flew overhead in a "Missing Man" formation at the end of the service in honor of Armstrong's service as a naval aviator.

National remembrances

According to NASA, planning is underway for a national service to be held Sept. 12 in Washington, D.C., although no other details have been released.

In the meantime, two NASA centers held public tributes on Friday.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the visitor center for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., hosted a ceremony around its 363-foot tall Saturn V rocket display, launching red, white and blue balloons in memory of Armstrong. Present were astronauts Owen Garriott, Jan Davis and Fred Leslie.

The Kennedy Space Center in Florida also met around its moon rocket exhibit at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where center director Robert Cabana led the remembrance.

President Barack Obama ordered flags be flown at half mast on the day Armstrong is interred, although when that will occur and where the late moonwalker will be laid to rest is not yet public.

Wink at the (blue) moon

Earlier this week, the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in the astronaut's hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio held a public tribute, where attendees gathered to "wink at the moon," a gesture first suggested by Armstrong's family.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said in a statement.

In a coincidental bit of cosmic alignment, Friday is a "blue moon," or the second full moon of the month.

More tangible tributes are underway on television and in print.

The Discovery Channel is set to air "One Giant Leap: A Neil Armstrong Tribute," a new one-hour documentary, on Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT. The program includes footage from Armstrong's final public appearance and interviews with Apollo 11 crewmates Aldrin and Collins.

And Easton Press, which specializes in limited edition, leather-bound books, has partnered with LIFE magazine to publish a special 96 page photo retrospective. The book, "Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012," is set for release in October.

Armstrong's family has established the "Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative," a memorial fund benefiting the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. They have asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Initiative, or to two scholarship funds setup in Armstrong's name by the Telluride Foundation and by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

What babies eat after birth likely determines lifetime risk of metabolic mischief and obesity, rat studies suggest

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Rats born to mothers fed high-fat diets but who get normal levels of fat in their diets right after birth avoid obesity and its related disorders as adults, according to new Johns Hopkins research. Meanwhile, rat babies exposed to a normal-fat diet in the womb but nursed by rat mothers on high-fat diets become obese by the time they are weaned.

The experiments suggest that what mammalian babies -- including humans -- get to eat as newborns and young children may be more important to their metabolic future than exposure to unhealthy nutrition in the womb, the Hopkins scientists say.

"Our research confirms that exposure to a high-fat diet right after birth has significant consequences for obesity," says Kellie L.K. Tamashiro, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of the study published online in the journal Diabetes. "But it also suggests that by putting children on a healthy diet in infancy and early childhood, we can intervene and potentially prevent a future of obesity, diabetes and heart disease."

Obesity has become a worldwide public health problem that often leads to many other disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. A significant concern in Western society is the consumption of modern diets high in fat: Rates of obesity are skyrocketing, costing the health care system billions and reducing longevity.

In the Johns Hopkins experiments, newborn baby rats exposed to a high-fat diet through the breast milk of rat mothers fed high amounts of fat were more likely to gain excessive weight, have impaired tolerance to glucose (a sign of prediabetes) and become insensitive to the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite and body weight in humans and rodents and can be disrupted in obese mammals. Leptin, secreted by fat cells, signals how much fat is around and controls food intake; obese people often are insensitive to the signals, for reasons so far unclear.

To compare the impact on offspring obesity of prenatal versus postnatal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet, Tamashiro and her team began by feeding half of the pregnant rats a high-fat diet and half a normal diet. After birth, half of the offspring of the high-fat moms were given to the normal-diet moms to nurse and vice versa. Those exposed to a high-fat diet both before and after birth (through breast milk) gained more weight and were obese by the time they were weaned, as were those who were only nursed by rats on a high-fat diet. Those born to mothers on a high-fat diet but nursed by rats on a normal diet did not suffer the same fate.

Tamashiro and her colleagues currently are trying to determine whether exercise in early rat development, the equivalent of elementary school age in humans, can reverse the effects of exposure to a high-fat diet.

"These animals -- like children -- are still developing and responding to their environment, and, as much as possible, we want to make sure they develop properly so bad health consequences don't occur," she says.

While the findings are important steps in understanding how prenatal and postnatal environments affect development, Tamashiro cautions that data from rats don't directly translate into human application.

Still, Tamashiro says, obstetricians may be on the right track as they rethink guidelines for pregnant women. Many suggest that obese women limit weight gain during pregnancy by reducing fat and calories. Obese mothers who switch to healthier diets during pregnancy and then maintain them while nursing may be able to help their children avoid the road to obesity, Tamashiro says.

"Obesity rates have increased threefold over the last 20 years," she says. "We know it's not because of genetics because our genes don't change that quickly. So we are focusing on the developmental environment. Obese children are developing metabolic disorders earlier, affecting their quality of life and health over the long term. Prevention is probably the best strategy we have."

Other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study include Bo Sun, M.D.; Jianqun Yan, M.D., Ph.D.; and Timothy H. Moran, Ph.D.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (DK-077623) and the NIH's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (HD-055030).

Opulent1's ~ Blogs of Abundance!~: When You Look In The Mirror ...

?

?It might seem that the answer to this question should be rather obvious.? Surely you see yourself when you look in the mirror?? But this is not strictly true.? What you see depends upon how you look at yourself and what you look for in yourself.? It depends upon how you view your world.
Some people like what they see when they look in the mirror; others do not.? Some people see just a physical image of them selves, be it real or distorted, whilst others see beneath the surface.? What we all desire, but not all of us feel, is to like what you see irrespective of your perspective.
To like yourself as a person enables you to like what you see when you look in the mirror.? Life is a lot easier for those people who feel comfortable in their own skin and at ease with themselves in the environment in which they live.? You find many a person who is beautiful looking and yet they do not like what they see in the mirror.? Conversely, there are others who one would not describe as physically beautiful but what they see in the mirror is beautiful.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.? This is not just related to how others might see you, it also relates to how you choose to see yourself.? Real beauty comes from within and this comes back to liking yourself as a person and being comfortable with whom you are.? Therefore if you do not like what you see in the mirror it is important to look within and identify what it is that you do not like.
Hypnosis can be used to aid this process as it allows you to access the inner workings of your mind.? You can access you innermost thoughts, which can otherwise be hidden from your consciousness.? Your subconscious mind is where your instinctive thoughts and beliefs are stored.? These are the beliefs that program your actions automatically, without you having to think about them or even to be aware of them.
Hypnosis accesses your subconscious thoughts and behaviors and therefore makes it easier for you to identify the chain reaction of cause and effect in your own actions.? Once you know why you think in a particular way you are then able to change your reactions as well as to alter erroneous beliefs.
With hypnosis you can remove deep-rooted detrimental patterns of thought and replace then with new and empowering ones.? You can build your self-belief and your self-confidence easily and quickly with the help of hypnosis mp3 downloads.

Analysts: Financial impacts after Venezuela blast

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The deadly blast and fire at Venezuela's biggest refinery are prompting critics to question whether the state oil company has been neglecting maintenance while helping fund government programs under President Hugo Chavez.

Analysts say the disaster at the Amuay refinery could also mean a financial hit for state-run Petroleos de Venezuela SA by forcing it to further increase imports of fuel for domestic consumption.

The refinery remained shut down Wednesday, a day after firefighters put out the last of the blazes that had raged in fuel tanks since the explosion early Saturday. Officials say the blast killed at least 41 people and injured more than 150.

In recent years, Chavez's government has increasingly used a share of earnings from the state oil company, known as PDVSA, to bankroll social programs known as "missions." Its contributions to such programs rose from less than $1.6 billion in 2004 to $10.4 billion last year.

The government's pressure on the company to generate funds for programs that shore up Chavez's support has led to a "deterioration that PDVSA has had in its refining activities," said Asdrubal Oliveros, an economist and director of the consulting firm Ecoanalitica.

He said the state oil company has concentrated bigger investments in oil production to prevent output from slumping "but has neglected other activities, among them refining."

He and other oil industry experts say insufficient maintenance made disasters likelier. Government officials counter that PDVSA has invested $6 billion in maintaining refineries during the past five years.

It remains unclear how much money the disaster may cost PDVSA.

"That is evidently going to generate bigger supply problems in the country than those that already exist," said oil expert Juan Carlos Sosa, who heads the Venezuelan consulting company Petroleo YV.

He said he expects the refinery shutdown will lead to increased fuel imports, meaning more government spending on fuel at international prices.

Sosa said rising imports of gasoline and other refined fuels even before the disaster reflected problems at Venezuelan refineries that have prevented them from keeping up with demand.

In the first half of this year, fuel imports by PDVSA reached $4.9 billion, up 86 percent from the $2.6 billion in imports during the same period last year, according to official figures.

That included 54,000 barrels of gasoline per day that Venezuela imported from the U.S. in April, the last month for which figures were available. That monthly average was 38 percent higher than what Venezuela was buying from the U.S. during the same month last year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Sosa and other analysts say Venezuela has been importing more fuel in recent years both because people are using more and because refineries aren't keeping up. Sosa said that's partly due to maintenance problems.

In other countries, such a refinery disaster would likely bring higher costs at the pump for customers. But Venezuela has for decades offered its citizens highly subsidized gasoline at the cheapest prices in the world: about 9 U.S. cents per gallon (2 U.S. cents per liter).

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez has said Venezuela has plenty of fuel on hand to meet domestic demand in the aftermath of the disaster, but he has not discussed the possible financial impacts for the state oil company.

CIC Insurance H1 profit down 17 pct on listing costs

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan group CIC Insurance posted a 17 percent drop in first-half pretax profit to 470 million shillings, hurt by one-off costs related to its bourse listing.

CIC, which listed its shares earlier this year, said on Thursday its earnings should improve in the second-half due to the absence of those costs and improving economic fundamentals.

Inflation and exchange rates have stabilised this year, while commercial lending rates have started to fall after the central bank began cutting rates in July after inflation fell.

CIC's gross written premiums rose 27 percent to 4 billion shillings while investment income surged 75 percent to 471 million, it said.

Insurance is viewed as a growth sector in the east African nation, because of low penetration rates, with only about 8 percent of the population having any form of insurance cover.

Another Kenyan insurer, CFC, has reported a 23 percent drop in first-half profit.

5 smart personal financial planning tips for college students

Post image for 5 smart personal financial planning tips for college students

This is a guest post by Alicia, a specialist in financial blogging from Manchester. Apart from blogging, she does research on?payday loans. Follow her on twitter ?at?@financeport. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

The present breed of youngsters are known for their party oriented and care free lifestyle who are seldom bothered about their future and live in the present.
In order to gain interest of people around them, they spend money casually and fuel their desire of being popular. This ultimately results in low savings and loss of funds for their further education. The impact has to be highlighted for every college student so that they change such attitudes and follow the right path in planning their personal finance.

Here are five smart tips on how to do this,

Create a budget plan:?The basic thing that will be followed by every individual irrespective of their age group is designing a budget. Although it is an easy procedure to pen in all the financial considerations, many people fail in executing these plans. This is because the plan is not made in a realistic manner and is difficult to follow. Instead of facing the trouble later, it is better that you plan efficiently now.

Take advantage of student offers:?When you want to purchase something that may be stationary, any student related item or even clothes, you will find special offers and discounts that are available for students. Lookouts for these offers and take advantage of them as they will save you cash that can be utilized for some other necessities. And also if you shop in groups that result in bulk purchase then you can get additional discounts.

Adopt sharing culture:?One of the best advantages that you can make use of is sharing, that will benefit you in many ways. For example, if you need to purchase books that are necessary for your research and your budget supports in affording only few of them, then you can purchase all the books needed along with your classmates that can be shared both in cost and use. This way you will not only save money but also benefit yourself.

Early savings:?This is the right age where you can learn from your economic errors, as they are smaller and can be easily rectified by your parents and well-wishers. But once you become independent you may not be able to recover your loss, so start saving at these early stages. This should be frequent so that you get habituated to this culture that can be followed in future. And also you can utilize this cash in emergency requirements.

Avoid credit cards usage:?Some credit card companies offer credit cards for the youngsters who turn 18. This will be beneficial for them as they gain huge profits by fooling them easily, by?capitalizing?on their?naivete?in personal finance matters. In order to avoid such issues you have to stop using these credit cards. If you have used one in the past and have a debt on it, then you can clear it either from your savings or through payday loans. As payday loans are instant loans that can be availed even by student who has part time job. That said, as a student, it is advisable to avoid any kind of credit.

How to Blog and Blogging on The Internet for Business - Traffic Falcon!

Article by James Murray

How to Blog and Blogging on The Internet for Business

Blogging is mostly about the blogging jargon. To understand blogs, you need to know the terms blog, platform, domain, and web host. Once you have mastered these key elements of blogging, you can enter any conversation about blogging with confidence. After you know what exactly a blog is, you will be on your way to passing the final exam on blogging.

Blog is short for weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. That is all! Most blogs are text, but there are also photo blogs and video blogs. The rest of blogging has to do with the technical side of things. If you are setting up a blog, you will need a platform, a web host, and a domain. A blogging platform is a computer software program that allows you to write posts and to update your blog. Your platform is also what you used to design the look of your blog, from color scheme to font size. The web host is somewhat like the virtual file cabinet where your blog is stored. Your computer communicates with the host when you upload or edit a post. The domain is the online address of your blog, and usually ends in ?dot com?. Now that you know what a blog is, what a platform is, and what domains and hosts are, congratulate yourself! You have passed the test on blogging.

If you run a small company, you may find that the world of blogging for business owners is a world that you want to be a part of. Blogging is a great way to get the word out to consumers about your product or service, and it can even be useful for inspiring employee loyalty and helping you keep your workers at peak morale. If you are looking for a way to take your business to the next level, consider what starting a blog might be able to do for you.

Blogging for business owners has a lot in common with all other types of blogging, but it has its own unique pitfalls and strengths. The key to having a successful blog as a business owner is keeping your goals clear and concrete at every step of your blogging adventure. It can be all to easy to get sidetracked, especially if you are just learning about the exciting possibilities of blogging technology, but if you want your blog to succeed you need to stay focused. Write up a plan for how often you will update, how you will promote your blog and retain readers, whether you will feature photographs or video, and other aspects of your blog, and then stick to it with the same kind of determination that you used when you built your company.

The Top Email List Building Rules For Online Marketers | Article ...

?

There are some very important email list building rules that must be used in order to build what should be the most valuable asset of any online marketer?s business. Once you have built an email list that you have cultivated to the point where you are trusted by your members, where they feel a bond and will follow your recommendations then it really is possible to use such a list as a cash point.

Yet to get to that position, you really have to be disciplined and ensure you are using every rule to your advantage. Also, an email list does not have to be large to be financially worthwhile. Some of the most profitable lists are the ones where there may only be a few thousand, or even a few hundred, but where the members stay for a long period and trust you implicitly.

The first rule is to view your prospect and customer email lists as assets. This really is the best asset your online business can have, knowing that the list you have built now has a relationship with you and even feels that they must continue to rely on your for their information. Add in trust and it is a very attractive financial position to be in.

It is so important to stay away from the sell, sell, sell type of online marketing. There is nothing worse than continually receiving email after email from online marketers who keep pushing the latest ?must have? secret or solution. They are not trying to build a relationship with their email list but all they are interested in is the sale. And the problem they encounter is that they must keep toping up their list with new prospects as there will be a high unsubscribe rate.

The next rule is to use more than one list building source. Don?t ever rely on just one source of targeted traffic arriving on your opt in page. There are many ways to attract such traffic such as blog posts, online articles, press releases, audios, videos, comments left on group pages and forums plus also using social media in specific ways. Different parts of your target market will be located in different platforms around the internet so it is the information marketer?s job to go and hunt them down.

When you generate traffic from many sources then you must continually test the results rather than say creating one landing page or sign up box and leave it there for ever more. You have to test different types including using different wording, images and placement on the page. It can sometimes come down to changing one word that makes the sign up rate skyrocket. And don?t neglect to track your results to find what set up is the most optimum for you.

Following on from that, don?t ever buy email optin lists which are email addresses that are offered for sale. These lists are cold, don?t know who you are and are a waste of money. So just avoid them. Lastly, it really is advantageous to trial and see how social media can assist with your email list building. This can be very effective if used to raise your profile, generate a conversation and get those who have shown an interest in you to seek out further information. Just make sure you don?t use this platform for selling.

So there are the six email list building rules to abide by to create for your online marketing business an ever expanding email list filled with prospects that want to receive more information from you and are interested in learning from you. These make the ideal customers though it does take time and effort to get to the stage where a recommendation from you will result in a whole load of sales.

Kenyan police fire teargas in Mombasa, tensions rise

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Kenyan anti-riot police fired teargas at stone-throwing youths in the port city of Mombasa on Tuesday in a new outburst of violence a day after the murder of a Muslim cleric led to riots that left one person dead.

Youths barricaded several streets with burning tires in the predominantly Muslim Majengo neighborhood, before armed police dispersed the crowds and patrolled the streets. Most shops in the business district were shut.

"These people, the police, are joking. They are taking this thing lightly, but the way I see it, it will not be good," shop keeper Kassim Ali told Reuters as police cleared a smoldering roadblock.

On Monday gunmen shot dead Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo, spraying his car with bullets in a killing many Muslims in Mombasa have blamed on the police. One person was killed in the ensuing unrest.

Washington and Nairobi had both accused the controversial preacher of helping al Shabaab, Somalia's Islamist rebel group.

The al Qaeda-linked militant group called on Kenyan Muslims on Tuesday to protect their religion at all costs and boycott next year's presidential election, and condemned what it said was a "witch-hunt" against Muslims by the Kenyan authorities.

"Muslims must take the matter into their own hands, stand united against the Kuffar (non-believers) and take all necessary measures to protect their religion, their honor, their property and their lives from the enemies of Islam," al Shabaab said in a statement posted on the social media site Twitter.

Afghan violence offers grim future

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Insurgents beheaded 17 people at a party in a Taliban-controlled area, and an Afghan soldier killed two U.S. troops, bringing the two-day death toll Monday to about 30.

Near-daily attacks by militants and increasingly frequent deadly violence against NATO troops by their Afghan allies highlight an embarrassing failure of Western policy: After nearly 12 years of military intervention, the country is not pacified. Once the United States and other countries pull out their troops, chaos seems almost certain to return and Taliban domination in large parts of the country is hardly implausible.

The beheadings occurred in southern Helmand, the same province where more than 100 insurgents attacked an Afghan army checkpoint and killed 10 soldiers.

Helmand was the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's surge, when he ordered 33,000 additional U.S troops to Afghanistan to help the military with a counterinsurgency plan. That plan hoped to turn the tide in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar and establish the governmental institutions that would allow the Afghan government to take control of the Taliban heartland.

Two years later, however, Helmand is still so lawless that Afghan government officials couldn't even go to the Taliban-controlled town where the beheadings were reported. Many Afghans in the south, the Taliban's birthplace and the home of the country's Pashtun speaking population, are leery of a government that many consider to be corrupt and ineffective.

The problem is compounded by a rapid reduction in American and international aid, which fueled most of the growth in the south in recent years. Afghanistan, one of the world's 10 poorest countries, has received nearly $60 billion in civilian aid since 2002. Now it stands to receive $16 billion, or about $4 billion a year, in the next four years. By comparison, the U.S. alone spent that much in 2010.

Analysts also say that a public worn down by a war that began just a month after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks no longer cares about Afghanistan, and that the war has slipped off the radar screens and is now considered by many to be over.

"The problem with this attitude is that Afghanistan ? or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. Men and women keep dying, and U.S. policies keep accelerating the centrifugal forces that are driving the country toward civil conflict, which may have profound implications for future regional and international security," said Sarah Chaynes, a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in a commentary published Sunday.

"Choosing to ignore problems is rarely a good way to solve them," said Chaynes, who spent nearly a decade in Afghanistan and served as an adviser to the U.S. military.

Most of the problems are likely to surface in Helmand and the south, where most of the surge troops will be removed as part of a drawdown that will reduce U.S. forces in Afghanistan from a peak of nearly 103,000 last year to about 68,000 in October. Other nations, including Britain, are also drawing down in the south, and nearly all foreign military forces are to leave the country by the end of 2014.

The forces are to be replaced by Afghan army and police units, but many have questioned the effectiveness of a force that has high desertion rates, is often poorly disciplined, and is supposed to reach a high of about 350,000 at the end of the year.

Another growing concern is the loyalty of the Afghan troops that the U.S. has spent more than $22 billion to train in recent years.

Insider attacks have been a problem for the U.S.-led military coalition for years, but they recently have become a crisis. There have been at least 33 such attacks so far this year, killing 42 coalition members, mostly Americans. Last year, there were 21 attacks, killing 35; and in 2010 there were 11 attacks with 20 deaths.

In the latest such attack, two American soldiers were killed in eastern Laghman province.

There were conflicting reports about whether the attack was intentional or accidental.

In Washington, a U.S. Defense Department official said the Afghan soldier fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Americans, and that this seemed to indicate that it was an intentional act. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because an investigation is under way, said he was unaware of any indications that the shooting was accidental.

Noman Hatefi, a spokesman for the Afghan army corps in eastern Afghanistan, said a group of U.S. and Afghan soldiers came under an insurgent attack in Laghman province. He said the two Americans were killed when an Afghan soldier fell and accidentally discharged his weapon.

"He didn't do this intentionally. But then the commander of the (Afghan) unit started shouting at him, 'What did you do? You killed two NATO soldiers!' And so he threw down his weapon and started to run," Hatefi said.

The U.S. troops had already called in air support to help with the insurgent attack and the aircraft fired on the escaping soldier, killing him, Hatefi said.

The chief spokesman for NATO forces in the country said coalition forces were not pulling back from collaborating with the Afghans because of the attacks.

"We are not going to reduce the close relationship with our Afghan partners," Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz told reporters in the capital.

There were also conflicting reports about the other violence.

In the beheadings, a local government official initially said the victims were civilians at a celebration late Sunday involving music and dancing in Helmand's Musa Qala district. The official, Neyamatullah Khan, said the Taliban killed the partygoers for flouting the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants.

But a provincial government official said later that those killed were caught up in a fight between two Taliban commanders over two women, who were among the dead. Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial government, said shooting broke out during the fight. He said it was unclear whether the music and dancing triggered the violence and whether the dead were all civilians or possibly included some fighters.

Ahmadi said all of the bodies were decapitated, but it was not clear if they had been shot first.

The Taliban denied any responsibility for the attack, which was condemned by President Hamid Karzai, by the head of the U.S.-led NATO coalition, by the U.N. and by the European Union.

"No Talib have killed any civilians. Neither were Taliban commanders fighting each other. We don't know about this thing. Whether it happened or not, we were not involved," said Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi.

The Taliban have controlled large parts of Musa Qala, a district encompassing more than 100 villages, since 2001. They enforce the same strict interpretation of Islamic law that was imposed during Taliban rule of Afghanistan from 1996-2001.

U.S. Marines have battled the Taliban since they arrived in the region about two years ago. Although U.S. and foreign forces made significant gains in the south, insurgents still wield significant power in the area, and it is expected to increase as the Marines and other forces withdraw.

As a consequence, many Afghans and international observers have expressed concerns the Taliban will try to re-impose strict Islamic justice. Under the Taliban, all music and film was banned as un-Islamic, and women were barred from leaving their homes without a male relative as an escort.

Another sign that the Taliban may be returning in strength is the attack that killed 10 Afghan soldiers. The attack occurred late Sunday at a checkpoint in Helmand's Washir district, said provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi.

Father Reportedly Stabs Family, Kills Eight-Month-Old Baby | News ...

An eight-month-old baby died and another child and woman were injured during a domestic dispute at a trailer park early Saturday morning. Just after midnight, Houston police arrived at the Kings Row trailer home park on Telephone Road near Fuqua, addressing an assault in progress.

According to police, there was a shattered window and a male suspect holding a bleeding woman at knifepoint upon their arrival.

Two children, an eight-month-old and a two-year-old, were also on the scene; both were lying on the floor, suffering from stab wounds and bleeding. The suspect reportedly attempted to slit his own throat but was tazered and brought into custody after a struggle with authorities.
